A New York City native, I am a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. For three semesters I majored in fine art. Then I switched my concentration to graphic design and advertising art to enhance my opportunities for employment as an artist in the commercial field. Following school, I landed a job in advertising. At the same time, I continued to develop as a fine artist through additional courses at SVA and study with established New York-based artists. In addition, I became a student of cinematography, which sparked a fervid interest in still photography. I was soon receiving commissions for portraits and other projects while also enjoying the challenges of commercial art. In my off hours I worked relentlessly to hone my drawing and painting skills and exhibit whenever possible. Among my earliest exhibits was a solo show at the Emily Lowe Gallery in Chelsea on Manhattan’s West Side. I also spent a year as a member of a New York-based traveling art-exhibition group. |
As a commercial artist I began receiving design and concept awards within the industry and eventually was promoted to art director. Working for various advertising agencies and publishing companies in New York and Maryland‚ holding positions that included art director in both advertising and magazine publishing, illustrator and marketing designer. Freelance projects were also a part of my experience. In 1977, I stopped producing fine art to devote the necessary time, attention and energy to parenting. In 1990, I resumed painting, gradually restoring and expanding my skills. Then in 2001, a fire—the result of a lightning strike—destroyed my home, my possessions and my entire life’s work. Since that time, a renewed enthusiasm has inspired me to produce a variety of new works that have earned places—and awards—at both local and national venues. |
